Who needs to complete a Basic Hunter Education course?

By state law, if you are 18 years of age or older and you want to purchase your first-ever hunting license, you must complete a Basic Hunter Education course (in any U.S. State, Canada, or Mexico).

Minor hunters (12-17 years of age) follow special regulations. While minors are not mandated to complete a Basic Hunter Education to purchase a license, it is a prerequisite to particpate in some special youth hunts and it allows minors 15-17 years of age to hunt without direct supervision.
