Tyringham Annual Census

TYRINGHAM – Town Clerk Catherine Mardula announced that the town’s annual street list forms will be mailed to all households in January.  Massachusetts General Law Ch. 51, sec. 4 requires the town to conduct this annual census, and it is critical that all residents return the forms to the town clerk’s office promptly.

Failure to respond to the annual census will result in removal from the active list of registered voters, “failure to respond to this mailing for two consecutive years shall result in removal from the active voting list and may result in removal from the voter registration rolls,” according to the statute.

Residents should not use the census form for the purpose of voter registration. Anyone not registered to vote can do so with the town clerk by mailing a completed voter registration form to that office. The census form cannot be used to change political party affiliation, either. That also must be done with a voter registration form which is available online either from the Secretary of State’s website or at the Town Hall.

Parents of college students or members of the military cannot remove their family member from the census form if they are registered voters in Tyringham. These names cannot be deleted on the form unless the student or armed forces member has personally signed the form as well as the member of the household completing the paperwork.

Every member of the household should be listed on the form. Information regarding dependent children is not public record and is only used by the school district for enrollment purposes. Also, information collected regarding a person's status as a veteran “shall not be a public record and shall only be disclosed to the adjutant general, the secretary of veterans' services and local veterans' service officers,” states the statute.

All forms should either be mailed back to Town Clerk, PO Box 442, Tyringham MA 01264 or dropped off at the Town Clerk’s black box outside the front entrance to the Town Hall.

Please return only for the census form. Do not include tax payments.

Anyone who does not received a 2022 census form in the next several weeks or who has questions about the form should contact the Town Clerk at 413-372-6334, and leave a message or at townclerk@bcn.net
